More car-related hassles... I got a puncture while driving around the East Lancashire villages that surround Pendle Hill, a rather unappreciated landscape and one I like a lot. Unfortunately, due to my own incompetence (the usual culprit), my spare tyre was flat too. So I started hitch-hiking with the spare tyre. The third car that stopped was a lady who said she could take me to the tyre centre in Colne. Perfect.
The guy at Colne Tyre Centre checked out the tyre and said it wasn’t punctured after all. It was just a faulty valve, which he replaced. No charge, he said. “Where’s your car?”, he asked. A couple of miles away, I said; I was going to ring for a taxi. “I’ll take you”, the guy said. With the tyre in the boot, we drove off into the countryside. It was a beautiful day. “You know”, he said, “I never get to see all this. I live in Accrington, and work in Colne, and I just never have the time”.
He dropped me at my car. At the moment he left me, he’d repaired my tyre, and given me a lift, and hadn't asked for a penny in payment. So a very big “thank you” to the good folk at Colne Tyre Centre. I swapped tyres and drove back to the tyre centre. They repaired the puncture, I paid up and I drove away again... reassured that I now had a serviceable spare. Amazingly, the whole operation had taken little over an hour.*
It’s so easy to complain about poor service that we too often forget to recognise good service. I’ll happily take my next punctured tyre to Colne Tyre Centre, even if it means going a few miles out of my way. That’s Colne Tyre Centre, Bridge Street, Colne...
